April Chang – Be the Good Story

“The main goal is to help people “be the good story” so we can continue to see Mitchell's joy and happiness in the world."

“When my husband said that they needed facemasks in the hospital, I realized that this was serious. Marvin doesn’t raise red flags often.  I looked around social media and when I didn’t see any organized effort to get facemasks to the medical community, I realized that we needed to do something to help. Part of the mission of The Mitchell Chang Foundation is to benefit and help the community in any way that arises and this was it.

The Mitchell Chang Foundation was started in honor of my child, Mitchell, who drowned at a swim school in 2018 when he was 3 years old. We started the foundation because we wanted to make an impact on the world since Mitchell isn’t here to do it himself. Simply, he was sunshine defined and loved to play outdoors. With his spirit in mind, our mission became providing free and inclusive playgrounds for the children of San Antonio. The main goal is to help people “be the good story” so we can continue to see his joy and happiness in the world.

During this pandemic, people were inspired by Mitchell to be their own good story.  Many volunteered to help supply facemasks to hospitals and other health care workers around our city. I wasn’t expecting so many people to notice and to care. People who hadn’t been part of projects like these before said that Mitchell and his story had inspired them to make a difference within their own worlds. The foundation has helped supply over 11000 masks to 116 units in 13 local hospitals and is partnering with HEB to help provide facemasks to the San Antonio community. People are finally feeling and understanding the good story.”
