I’m from Kingwood, Texas; a small suburb on the north-east side of Houston. Kingwood is a cookie-cutter suburban area that doesn’t provide any exposure to diversity and different ways of life. The diverse and culturally rich environment of UTSA and San Antonio itself caught my attention and so I applied to UTSA for undergrad. Today, as a senior biology major and community health minor, I can confidently say that attending UTSA was the best decision I could have made. I’ve taken guitar lessons with the elderly at the Lions Field Adult and Senior Center, watched young women have quinceañera photoshoots at the Japanese Tea Gardens, learned how to provide primary care to the homeless population at Corazón Clinic, danced and ate el pollo ranchero at NIOSA, and I will forevermore pick La Panadería over Panera Bread. San Antonio has taught me that education is not limited to the classroom, that sharing each other’s stories and cultures is what makes us human, and that everyone has a unique story to tell. I am beyond excited to be part of the San Antonio People Project and help people share their unique stories.
